May and June 2020

Changing arrangements of shelves at work while closed to the Public

The Library where I work is still closed to the Public but staff are still working. We spent a lot of time cleaning the shelves and rearranging the layout of the library. Knocking down shelves and relocating them in a different spot. Things that were in short supply at the supermarket are now back on shelves. I did a lot of reading during May and June. Still could not go anywhere except to work.

This was set mostly in the present time with flashbacks to the 1760’s. Set mostly in Oxleigh in the UK. Thea Rust takes up a job at Oxleigh College to teach history while working on doctoral studies on witchcraft.

Thea settles into her assigned accommodation in an old house where she will be supervising 14 students aged 16 to 17 years.

I loved the description of the house originally known as the Silk House and the way the life of the people who originally lived in the house was woven into the story using flashbacks to 1768 and a time when the house was inhabited by a silk merchant and his wife and three servants. Prudence, Alice and Rowan.

Thea researches the history of the Silk House and gathers information about witchcraft in the area linking one of the servants that lived in the house being accused of witchcraft.

A history of an old house with a secret waiting to be discovered. I loved it.

Romily is followed by photographer's and finds it difficult to go to school so she spends her days with her father and roaming the countryside with an elusive friend called Stacey.

I loved the way Romily's father hid clues of family secrets in the illustrations of his books for Romily to discover as she gets older.

Set mostly in the 1990's this was about family secrets and dementia. Things are not as they seam and Romily hears whispers of people she can barely remember, when things get too difficult for her she turns to Stacey.

Clare works with a young woman Melia whose partner is Kit. Kit stars on the river bus with Jamie, where they become friend with two other commuters.

I loved the way the story developed by introducing all the characters and how it switched between early 2019 and late December 2019.

Full of twists, lies and deception. Kit goes missing and Jamie was seen arguing with Kit prior to Kit’s disappearance.

When She Was Good by Michael Robotham

This was a Sequel to Good Girl, Bad Girl. A Cyrus Haven Series. Set in 2020 in UK,, with some flash backs to earlier years. Cyrus Haven is a psychologist and he has been searching for Sacha Hopewell for some time, in the hope of getting some information that will help him help Evie Cormac remember her real name.

Sacha Hopewell found Evie and named her Angel Face. Evie is scared and she has good reason to be scared. Dangerous people are hunting for her.

April 2020 Note Books and Searching

Covid-19 has put an end to going anywhere. Everyone told to stay at home. Streets are empty playgrounds closed. Library still closed. Staff  but no patrons. A good time to stay at home at weekends and sort out cupboards or fix things in the shed. Pulled out everything in cupboards in bedrooms trying to put things in better order so I do not have to spend so much time searching for things. At Easter our grand kids could not visit so we had a virtual Easter Egg Hunt and then my husband ate all the chocolate eggs. I made a delicious chocolate cake and also had a go at making face masks.

In April I started a new notebook. I bought it last year in June. I love nice notebooks and always have a great plan to fill them but when life gets busy I barley have time to write about the books I am reading let alone write about life.

The Search Party by Simon Lelic

A teenager called Sadie goes missing in a small town. A group of her friends go searching for her, while the police are also searching.

Detective Inspector Fleet is involved in the search helped by Nicky – Detective Sergeant Nicola Collins. DI Fleet and DS Collins work well as a team but DI Fleet has issues with Roger Burton the Superintendent.

This was a mystery. It was about detectives, relationships, families, friendships and secrets.

I liked the way Fleet interacted with Nicky and his family. Each of the five friends of Sadie has secrets and issues between themselves and their families. Who can they trust?

The Authenticity Project by Clare Pooley

Julian Jessop is elderly, lives on his own and is very lonely. He writes about his loneliness in a green notebook he calls the Authenticity Project and leaves it in Monica's coffee shop. Monica reads about Julian's loneliness and tries to create an activity for him to get out and meet others.

Monica then writes about her hopes and dreams and leaves the book on a table in a bar.
This is about the different people who find the green note book and how their lives are changed through their honesty.
This was about friendship. Their was a quote Monica would chant to herself - "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift" I loved this quote.

The Lost Love Song by Minnie Darke

The beginning is a bit sad. Other people appear and you get a feeling of their lives. I like that Bene finds a notebook with the notes of a song he heard being played. Bene intends to post the book to the owner.
Another character I like is Evie, aspiring to be an author. On page 71 she lists some of her unhelpful talents. One of them being the ability to "...put a cherry stalk into her mouth and tie a knot using her teeth and tongue." This is a good challenge on Christmas Day when you get together with family members. I have done it often so was able to identify with Evie.
I loved the music theme throughout. The characters were fantastic. Set in the present time, mostly in Melbourne and Tasmania with a few sections in Scotland and Canada.
This was sad and uplifting about writers, music and musicians.

The Good Turn by Dervla McTiernan

This was about police investigations, corruption, family relationships, abduction and murder. Set mostly in Galway, Ireland and a small seaside town of Rousdstone in 2015. This was fast paced and ful of action. I loved it.
