Covid-19 has put an end to going anywhere. Everyone told to stay at home. Streets are empty playgrounds closed. Library still closed. Staff but no patrons. A good time to stay at home at weekends and sort out cupboards or fix things in the shed. Pulled out everything in cupboards in bedrooms trying to put things in better order so I do not have to spend so much time searching for things. At Easter our grand kids could not visit so we had a virtual Easter Egg Hunt and then my husband ate all the chocolate eggs. I made a delicious chocolate cake and also had a go at making face masks.
In April I started a new notebook. I bought it last year in June. I love nice notebooks and always have a great plan to fill them but when life gets busy I barley have time to write about the books I am reading let alone write about life.
Books I was reading in April 2020
The Search Party by Simon Lelic
A teenager called Sadie
goes missing in a small town. A group of her friends go searching for her,
while the police are also searching.
Detective Inspector
Fleet is involved in the search helped by Nicky – Detective Sergeant Nicola
Collins. DI Fleet and DS Collins work well as a team but DI Fleet has issues
with Roger Burton the Superintendent.
This was a mystery. It
was about detectives, relationships, families, friendships and secrets.
I liked the way Fleet interacted with Nicky and his family. Each of the five friends of Sadie has secrets and issues between themselves and their families. Who can they trust?
The Authenticity Project by Clare Pooley
Monica then writes about her hopes and dreams and leaves the book on a table in a bar.
This is about the different people who find the green note book and how their lives are changed through their honesty.
This was about friendship. Their was a quote Monica would chant to herself - "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift" I loved this quote.
The Lost Love Song by Minnie Darke
The beginning is a bit sad. Other people appear and you get a feeling of their lives. I like that Bene finds a notebook with the notes of a song he heard being played. Bene intends to post the book to the owner.
Another character I like is Evie, aspiring to be an author. On page 71 she lists some of her unhelpful talents. One of them being the ability to "...put a cherry stalk into her mouth and tie a knot using her teeth and tongue." This is a good challenge on Christmas Day when you get together with family members. I have done it often so was able to identify with Evie.
I loved the music theme throughout. The characters were fantastic. Set in the present time, mostly in Melbourne and Tasmania with a few sections in Scotland and Canada.
This was sad and uplifting about writers, music and musicians.
The Good Turn by Dervla McTiernan
This was about police investigations, corruption, family relationships, abduction and murder. Set mostly in Galway, Ireland and a small seaside town of Rousdstone in 2015. This was fast paced and ful of action. I loved it.
The Beach Read by Emily Henry
This was a romance
novel about romance writer who is having trouble getting started on her latest
novel. Too many family issues and the need to find answers about a secret house
her father owned on a lake in North Bear Shores in Michigan.
January Andrews’ father
dies, January travels to North Bear Shores to spend time to write her latest
book and get her father’s house ready to sell.
January discovers the
writer living next door is her rival from many years ago. Gus Everett is also
having trouble with his next book because of relationship problems.
This was about secrets,
family relationships and writing.
